Hypothetically if one of the hippos in the zoo died that's a lot of meat that would go to waste.
 
There is still no reason not to keep some cuts for the zoo staff to try. I'm pretty sure there are instances of this happening with some animals they otherwise wouldn't be allowed to eat.
